LOTTE Chemical (CEO and Vice Chairman Kim Gyo-hyun) teamed up with Samsung Electronics Logitech (CEO Choi Yoo-beom) to expand resource circulation of packaging materials by recycling waste vinyl.

On the 26th, LOTTE Chemical announced that it entered an ‘MOU for sustainable material innovation and mutual cooperation’ on developing eco-friendly packaging materials by recycling waste plastics and expanding application of products with Samsung Electronics Logitech.

With this MOU, LOTTE Chemical will collect waste vinyl for product packaging from the logistics center of Samsung Electronics Logitech, and use it to produce high-quality packaging materials, and then supply it back to Samsung Electronics Logitech.

Waste vinyl made with PE (polyethylene) materials collected from Samsung Electronics Logitech will be reborn as packaging stretch film through LOTTE Chemical’s regenerated plastic materials technology (PCR). PCR is a technology that creates pellets in original format through a process of selecting, pulverizing and cleaning plastics that are discarded after use. It is featured by producing through mixing with existing products at a specific ratio to supplement the properties of plastics that were reduced due to recycling, and it requires high levels of material technologies and knowhow.

The two companies agreed to conduct pilot operations of recycling waste packaging materials from the central logistics center in Suwon of Samsung Electronics Logitech, and then expand it to other central and regional logistic centers. In addition, plans are to increase application to other recycled items such as packaging stretch film, zipper bags, air cap sheets, etc.

A spokesperson for LOTTE Chemical stated, “By combining LOTTE Chemical’s material technologies and Samsung Electronics Logitech’s logistics system, it is expected that recycling of waste packaging materials will increase and that we will be able to build an efficient resource circulation business model.”

Meanwhile, LOTTE Chemical announced in May that it would stay on pace with the recent global resource circulating trends to expand recycled and bio-plastic revenue to 2 trillion KRW and expand the business scope upwards of 1 million tons by 2030. It plans to develop and increase supply of various regenerated materials (PCR-PP, rPET, rPP, rABS, rPC, etc.) to preemptively prepare for increased demands of clients and global regulations, while also implement Project LOOP company-wide to build a plastic circulating economy system to focus on increasing environmental and social values.
