LOTTE Chemical is supporting the opening of the 6th “Our Neighborhood ESG Center” in Gangseo-gu, Busan, taking the lead in establishing a vital cycle system for waste plastic resource circulation within the local community.

The opening ceremony, held on the 29th, was attended by Kim Young-beon, Head of the Communications Division at LOTTE Chemical, Park Heong-joon, Mayor of Busan, Kim Hyeong-chan, Governor of Gangseo-gu, as well as officials from the Korea Labor Force Development Institute for the Aged and senior clubs.

The Gangseo-gu ESG Center was established as part of LOTTE Chemical’s resource circulation campaign, “Project LOOP.” Based on a memorandum of understanding signed with the Busan Metropolitan Government in September 2023, LOTTE Chemical has expanded the citywide resource circulation system across Busan by opening the first center in Geumjeong-gu, followed by additional centers in Dong-gu, Haeundae-gu, Yeongdo-gu, and Jung-gu, and now the 6th center in Gangseo-gu. With this latest opening, LOTTE Chemicals will support the operation of a total of nine (9) regional resource circulation hubs, including sites in Busan as well as Ulsan and Incheon.

The center will be operated as a “public-private-corporate cooperation model” that simultaneously delivers social value by promoting carbon neutrality and creating jobs for senior citizens. LOTTE Chemical will provide the facilities, equipment, and training necessary for the center’s operation, while Elephant Factory offers technical consulting services including the installation and operation of recycling equipment, interior design, and environmental education. The Gangseo-gu Senior Club will recruit local senior citizens to handle day-to-day operations such as collecting, sorting, and washing waste plastics. The collected waste plastics will be processed through Elephant Factory’s recycling system into recycled raw materials and reborn as new products.

Through this support, LOTTE Chemical plans to further advance the local waste plastic circulation system and implement meaningful ESG management. At the same time, the company aims to establish a stable sourcing foundation to secure high-quality recycled plastic raw materials in the future.

A LOTTE Chemical official stated, “The Gangseo-gu ESG Center is a meaningful example of the local community and an enterprise working together to establish a culture of resource circulation,” adding, “We will continue to expand activities that enhance the value of waste plastics and promote mutual growth with local communities through ‘Project LOOP.’”
